TF72 Running Day, Manly Dam, June 2008 Photo Gallery |

Once again it looked like Mother Nature was going to rain us out, Sydney
having received a week of soaking rain in the lead up to the Queen’s
Birthday Long Weekend; it wasn’t looking too good for the scheduled
Manly Dam running day, however on the Saturday morning the day dawned
fine and clear, with not a cloud in the sky. The day at Many Dam was delightful, the sun was bright, the Dam full to the brim thanks to the recent rains, with the local community, both human and animal, taking a close look at our activities. For the humans the attractions were the ships and subs, as for the wildlife, well several Kookaburras’ kept a VERY close eye on the sausages cooking on the barbie, under Peter Jones expert handling. David Batagol seems to be taking over from Pat Drake as the source of mad pyrotechnics; with his Improved Los Angeles class sub USS Greenville conducting submerged missile shoots to the delight of the crowds and the discomfiture of the local waterfowl. Geoff’s Godivari, Cape Don and Annapolis, Alan’s General Belgrano and Taragiri, Carl’s Storozhevoy, Mike’s Nemesis and Peter’s tugs joined David’s Greenville and Collins for a long and enjoyable sailing day. Unfortunately, the person who organised the day, John Slater, didn’t have a ship available to run, but his organisation was much appreciated. Two highlights made the day especially memorable. The first was a Collins Class chocolate cake baked by Pauline for John’s Birthday, which was delicious (as shown by the number of people who went back for seconds). You’re a lucky man John. The second was the arrival of a local fisherman who asked if it was OK for him to set up about 15 metres away from where we were sitting. We said sure, but scoffed at the chance of him catching anything other than the eels, which had been seen in the lake in the past. Just to prove us wrong he went and landed a large fish, much to our shock and amazement. The quote of the day went to Alan, who upon launching General Belgrano was heard to comment ‘You know, I can’t remember when I last charged the batteries’. A great winter’s sail, reminding us all of how great the hobby can be. Click on a photo to enlarge.
