| Once again this year's regatta was a
great weekend and our attempts to keep things simple seemed to pay
dividends with everyone enjoying themselves in a relaxed and friendly
atmosphere.
The weather, once again, played its tricks on us and whilst Saturday was quite good, Sunday proved to be just a bit too windy for safe sailing. No problems though, as it meant more time for just having a yarn. On the awards side of things, the following members took home the prizes....Phil Somerville won the "Wentworth Shield" with his fantastic HMAS SYDNEY (II). The President's award for the best first ship was won by Mark Buttsworth with his HMAS MELBOURNE, FFG-05. The Rob Sullivan Memorial Award for Excellence in Engineering was won by Roy Matilano for his work in extreme miniature and innovative use of all kinds of whirligigs and gadgets including Chuppa-Chupp spinners! Our Reviewing Officer, Commander Mike Noonan, RAN, Commanding Officer of HMAS PARRAMATTA (FFH-154), gave his "Bravo Zulu" Award (meaning "Well Done" in Naval terminology) to Russ French's USS WINSTON S. CHURCHILL, DDG-81. In addition to the "BZ" Mike gave several other awards in the form of commemorative medallions to Jim Campion for his HMAS PARRAMATTA, John Konda for his Russian KRIVAK III frigate and to Craig Taylor for his HMAS JERVIS BAY (INCAT-45). Our regular guest, the VOYAGER Association gave their annual award, this year a beautiful Port Crock, to Dave Rowlands for his HMAS STUART (DE-48). Finally the "Anchor Award" for the best "disaster or collision" for the weekend went without hesitation to Craig Laughton who made absolutely sure he didn't miss a bloody great concrete pylon when he broadsided same with USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65). Glad to report the "Big E" suffered only minor damage but the pylon is still not feeling the best. All too soon it was time to pack up and head home and much thanks goes to all those who lent a helping hand over the weekend and specially those who made the effort to come along and be part of the fun. Many members travel considerable distances to be part of the weekend which we greatly appreciate. Click on a photo to enlarge. [Back to Archived Post Mission Reviews] |
