Friday, April 30, saw advanced
elements of TASK FORCE 72 set sail down the Hume Highway heading for
Fleet base Wagga for their annual Carrier and Escort weekend.
Craig Laughton (USS ENTERPRISE), Graham Pack (USS GETTYSBURG) and Russ
French (USS WINSTON S. CHURCHILL) made the pilgrimage for an enjoyable
weekend in the country despite the weather being a bit "iffy".
Saturday was a complete washout (first decent rain in 6 months-of
course) but the intrepid voyagers made sure we visited all the local
sights - 2 hobby shops, 1 hardware shop, 1 car parts place and we were able
to inject some big city capital into the local Wagga economy.
Our sightseeing wouldn't have been complete
without visits to the workshops of Steve Batcheldore and Ron Debrueys
and what a workshop that is. Sensational workshop Ron! Time was also spent drying out Kerry James'
HMAS MELBOURNE - yes it does rain in NSW and MELBOURNE proved a better
catchment than the Warragamba Dam.
Sunday was fine but quite nippy with a gale
blowing, but all had heaps of fun and a reasonable sail on the lake.
This was followed by a great BBQ lunch before the Sydneyites had to head
back to the big smoke.
We would like to pass on our thanks to all the
folks at Wagga, especially Marilyn, Kerry's better half, for their
wonderful hospitality and warm welcome. We'll be back!
