Easter Sailing Weekend, Oasis Swimming Complex, Wagga Wagga April 2007 Photo Gallery

Over the Easter long weekend members of Task Force 72 - Fleet Base Wagga Wagga had two enjoyable days of sailing at the Oasis Swimming Centre in the heart of Wagga. Several TF 72 members made the trek to Wagga from Sydney, Canberra and from the local hills district (Tumbarumba) to try out this new sailing venue and to indulge in some country hospitality. A small group of local model boaters who usually sail there models at a lagoon in the center of town were also invited along for the weekend.

The outdoor pool at the swimming centre is closed to swimmers during the cooler months and at 50 meters long and ten lanes wide it makes a great venue to run models of all sizes. The modern facilities on offer in and around the swimming center are great and allowed the whole family to enjoy the weekend. There is plenty of cover and seating around the pool and there is a great kiosk and heated pool inside. Just across the road is the main shopping area of Wagga and several motels are within a couple of hundred meters. Parking and access were great and the pool management couldn’t have been more helpful. It did cost to get into the center but at $1 each per day it was certainly worth it.

The weather for the weekend was great with temps on both days in the mid to high 20’s. Lots of sailing, lots of talking and lots of relaxing. Some different models on display from the invited guests also helped to stir up some discussion.

Saturday night saw a BBQ at Kerry’s place where just a little alcohol was consumed while people stood around a fire to ward off the chill of the night air.

Over the weekend there were quite a few local residents come down to the pool to have a look at the models. All the usual questions were asked particularly when they saw the operational submarines scooting around the bottom of the pool.

In all a great weekend was enjoyed by all who attended. Thanks again to those who traveled to Wagga to participate and a special thanks to Kerry, Brian and Marilyn for organizing the event and the BBQ.

PS. We are planning to have another run at this great venue on the Sunday of the long weekend in June. If you think that you might like to attend just get in touch with one of the Fleet Base Wagga guys and they can give you all the info you need.

A view from the starting blocks of the outdoor pool at the Oasis Swimming Center. A great venue that we are able to use at minimal cost during the cooler months of the year.

HMAS Melbourne (Kerry James) with Skyhawks and Wessex Helicopter embarked.

HMAS Norman (Steve Batcheldor) was on patrol regularly over the weekend.

HMAS Brunei (Steve Batcheldor). Some of the smaller less powerful models are able to perform well in the sheltered waters of the pool.

Dave Manning just loves his type VII U-boat so much that he thought that he would go for a swim with it.

The real reason that Dave Manning went for a swim was to rescue Karl Maurer’s U-boat that had made itself comfortable at the bottom of the pool.
