Task Force 72, the centrepiece of Hubertus Model Boat Show

The weekend of 20 and 21 October saw members of Task Force 72 participating in the inaugural Sydney Model Boat Show, hosted by the Hubertus Model Boat Club.

Located in rural Luddenham in Sydney’s far west, the Model Boat Club has access to the extensive facilities of its parent club, the Hubertus Country Club. These include a sizable body of water and the Country Club’s buildings, which incorporate a restaurant, a sizeable auditorium, and most importantly from many modellers perspective, a well-stocked bar.

For two days this auditorium hosted models from more than half a dozen model boat clubs from across NSW and the ACT, including Task Force 72. While surrounded by the endeavours of other model builders, Task Force 72 stood out as the only club to have all models on display built to a single scale, and in the overall very high level of build quality displayed by members.

While the venue is a long way out from major population centres, there was a constant stream of visitors through the displays, many apparently members and guests of the Hubertus Country Club, curious to find out more about the strange folk who had congregated in the Country Club’s Auditorium

Club stalwarts Allan Pew and John Konda were present, as were Central Coast members Chas Baxter and David Rowlands, Wagga members Kerry James and Brian McCrowe, Karl Maurer from Canberra and Sydney member Roy Mattillano. Mike James dropped in after work late in the day on Saturday to say hi.

In addition to the members manning the TF72 display, there were a number of other TF72 members wearing their ‘second hats’ as members of other clubs in attendance.

Task Force 72 occupied the central location in the auditorium and with three carriers on display (HMS Dasher, HMAS Melbourne and USS Halsey) our display was the centre of attention for many of the Show’s guests as well. Kerry James won first prize for the best model of the show for his outstanding model of the former RAN flagship, Melbourne.

Many thanks to Hubertus Model Boat Club Captain (and TF-72 member), Jim Campion for organising the event, well done Jim.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks, with members participating in a number of events prior to this one, and another sailing meet at Mount Penang next week, but it’s great to get out from the workshop and onto the water in the lead up to the Annual Regatta, so see you there.
